Time again to think about your container plantings! Learn how to update and transition your container gardens through the cold weather. Will will cover how to keep your containers looking their best through the changing weather of spring and the use of un-conventional plant materials. Dress for the weather, part of this class will be held outdoors. Participants may also plant and purchase their own container for an additional fee of $55 payable the day of the event. Growing Vegetables from Seed - Save money by growing your own plants for your garden

In this two hour workshop we will learn about variety selection, what constitutes an heirloom or F1 hybrid, seed saving and more. We will discuss how to sow seeds successfully and how to schedule plants to avoid overgrown transplants. Tricks to ensure success will be covered as well as soil needs, temperature, container selection and nutrient needs. A large selection of Heirloom seeds will be available for purchase.t. All about Air Plants - Learn about Epiphytes - plants that grow without soil.

Tillandsia's, Bromeliads, Orchids and Staghorn Ferns are just a few of the plants that need no soil for their roots. Some of these plants don't even have roots. Curious about how they grow? Join us as we explore their native environments, cultural requirements and the tremendous variety first hand.
This two hour workshop will be devoted to the practical information needed for creating unique miniature gardens. Learn the proper technique for ‘planting' and display as we demonstrate branch and board mounting. We will also discuss propagation and some tricks to make the culture of these unusual plants more successful. Container Gardening for the Summer Season

Learn to choose suitable containers and plants along with some maintenance tricks to keep them looking their best. Container gardening is ideally suited to creative expression and 'quick changes' that allow us endless opportunities for experimenting with new and exciting plant combinations. In this workshop, you will learn how to keep your containers looking their best through the growing season. Tips on trimming, fertilizing and replacing spent plants will be covered.
We will explore seasonal changes with demonstrations that include; planting tricks to fill bare spots, special plant maintainance techniques, trimming, and ways to reduce watering needs. We will also discuss growing tomatoes and vegetables in pots. An assortment of plant material will be available. You may elect to plant your own container for a fee of $55. This includes a simple plant liner, potting soil and your choice of 6 plants.Requires advance registration through KCC. Class fee is $19, register by calling 815-802-8200

Organic Lawn Care - Learn how to nurture your turf organically

In this discussion we will review the history of lawns and their cultural significance as well as how to assess your lawn before beginning an organic program.
The benefits of an organic lawn program and ongoing care, maintenance and nutrient requirements will be covered. Learn to identify problems that contribute to poor turf, as we review culture and fertilizing schedules. Success with Tropicals - Keeping your exotic plants healthy

More and more tropical plants are finding their way to homes for summer containers, indoor spaces and offices. There is an endless variety of unusual tropicals to choose from and many benefit from summering outdoors. How do we transition them to the indoors at the end of the season? What about insects, soil and fertilizing? All of these topics will be covered during this two hour workshop to help you grow tropicals successfully. Join us as we exhibit unusual plant materials and garden Items at the 17th annual Summer Tour and Garden Faire, sponsored by the Kankakee Kultivator's Garden Club. 
Tour six lovely Gardens and the "Column" and "Let Freedom Ring" Gardens located at the Park.
Your lunch is included with the garden tour ticket price of $20

Succulents are amazing plants that are able to tolerate extreme conditions and still thrive. Come and learn about their origins and evolution during this informative discussion and demonstration. Demonstrations will show you how to combine plants for exotic, small container gardens.

Designing with Fall Color in the Landscape

Join Allan and the Kankakee Kultivator's Garden Club for a discussion of Fall Color in the landscape. Learn how to utilize dramatic fall colors to their best advantage. Favorite plant varieties will be covered along with tips for enhancing the natural garden. We will also discuss the inclusion of unusual plant materials to create that 'WOW' effect.
